Reading and writing

Tutoring begins first with an assessment of the student's current level of performance, knowledge, comprehension and strategy use.  An instructional program will be designed according to the individual needs of the student.  Instruction may include:

multi-sensory instruction in decoding skills utilizing a systematic and sequenced reading program based on Orton-Gillingham principles

systematic sight word instruction using auditory, visual and kinesthetic approaches

specialized high-interest reading materials coordinated with reading program

application of skills to authentic literature, science and social studies text

cognitive strategy instruction for teaching of reading comprehension

vocabulary skills instruction teaching word structure and meaning

spelling skills taught systematically by coordinating with reading instruction

writing process and structure directly taught
